The National Empowerment Center is proud to announce Alternatives 2013. The national mental health conference organized by and for those in the mental health consumer/survivor/peer recovery movement, will be held at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, Texas, from Wednesday, December 4, to Saturday, December 7, 2013.
       

Famous for its lively creative scene and progressive social climate, Austin is a fitting location for a conference focused on revitalizing ourselves and our communities. Austin’s friendly accepting culture of individual expression has made it a vibrant and eclectic creative center and haven for people of all walks of life.
 

The theme of Alternatives 2013 is:  Building Inclusive Communities: Valuing Every Voice.
 
Our individual and collective wellness is enhanced through creating caring, resilient, and strong communities that honor and embrace diversity. This year’s theme reflects the importance of valuing each individual as we build inclusive communities. Alternatives 2013 will serve as a catalyst for reenergizing our communities by providing opportunities to share skills and information about innovative peer-delivered supports, community-building initiatives, mental health recovery, wellness, and systems change.

The 9th National Harm Reduction Conference: From Public Health to Social Justice is the only multidisciplinary conference on issues relating to improving the health of drug users. Hundreds of people from around the country will meet to address HIV, hepatitis, overdose, incarceration, stigma and many other issues affecting drug users in this country. Physicians, medical workers, HIV/AIDS and hepatitis service agencies, organizations providing services for youth, and the homeless as well as community based and advocacy organizations are expected to attend.

"This conference has always been first rate and offers the opportunity to meet and network with a variety of clinicians, researchers, policy makers and government officials involved in substance abuse treatment. Although I no longer operate an OTP, I continue to find the conference a treasure trove of information and new ideas. Inasmuch as opioid misuse continues to be of great concern, it is an excellent place for those outside this particular specialty to acquaint themselves with state of the art research and effective interventions for problems such as prescription drug abuse. Many of the conference topics (spirituality, community relationships, recovery oriented systems of care, peer mentoring, stigma) have applicability beyond opioid addiction. The sizeable international contingent offers a thought provoking perspective on treatment in the US.
